Rev Up Your Metabolism!

By Lois Hamilton

Our metabolism can be thought of as our internal fire. If we keep adding beneficial fuel to this fire, it will burn efficiently resulting in; ideal weight, plenty of energy and clear thinking.

Here are four simple rules you can follow to rev up your metabolism:

Rule #1 – ALWAYS EAT BREAKFAST so our bodies can burn food (energy) to supply our cells with the energy they need to work properly.

Rule #2 – EAT MEALS AT REGULAR INTERVALS because if our body thinks that it’s going to starve, it will hold onto the calories stored and it will lower the metabolic rate resulting in body fat NOT getting burned up and a sluggish feeling.

Rule #3 – EAT ENOUGH, see rule#2. Your metabolism will slow down if you don’t eat enough, resulting in the inability to lose weight.

Rule #4 – BE ACTIVE in some way that you feel good about. Plan physical activity into your daily life, even if it’s only in ten minute bursts. Increased muscle mass = increased metabolism.

Food Choices – THINK PROTEIN. Protein is needed to build lean muscle mass and lean muscle burns more calories because your metabolism is twice as fired up. Add protein to every meal and snack. Eggs, lean meat, fish, legumes mixed with whole grains, nuts or seeds are good choices. THINK FIBER. Fiber helps to move food material along your digestive tract to keep the metabolism active. Apples, bananas, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds are good choices. DRINK water. According to studies, getting your quota of water (2 litres daily) can boost metabolism and it helps to eliminate waste products which also speeds up metabolism. DRINK green tea BUT limit it to 2 or 3 cups in the morning so as not to disrupt your evening sleep. Caffeine does boost metabolism but it also raises cortisol which can result in blood sugar dysregulation and hormonal imbalance.

The final strategy for this action plan is to choose LIVE FOOD. Live food still contains its own enzymes, which means that our body does not have to work so hard to digest this food, it already comes with the enzymes to digest it and so the metabolic system gets a break and our metabolism gets a boost! Live foods are foods that are raw, NOT processed and NOT cooked. Live food choices are raw vegetables, raw fruits, raw seeds and nuts, fermented vegetables and sprouted vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes. Sprouting seeds can be purchased at your local health food store.

So go to it – GET REVVED UP!!!
